In Texas, the Court that typically deals with “small claim” – known commonly as the JP Court – has raised its jurisdictional limit from $10,000 to $20,000. This will have an impact both in the number of filings, likely to increase, as well as the number of people who can now have their cases heard economically – e.g., no need to hire an attorney or file in county court. Of course, the losing party will still have the right to appeal de novo – anew – in the county court.
